A Rough Passage
Northport to Beaver Island
47.3 miles
We left at about 11 am headed to Beaver Island, where neither Chuck nor I had ever been. It’s an excellent jump off point for the passage through the Straits of Mackinac. Unfortunately, as so many times on this trip, we were headed straight into the wind so we were motoring.
The day started well. It was unseasonably warm in Northport, but as soon as we left the harbor, it cooled down nicely. The sun was shining. The water was calm. We even did a little bit of washing and waxing the boat.
But the winds were building in front of us, and so were the waves. Feather was not happy, and the deal Chuck and I made was that I had to take care of Feather if we brought her on this trip. She’s doing great, but this crossing was too much for her. She barfed in the cabin, first just a little bit and then later, the rest of it. I went down to console her, which worked mostly. With me curled around her she was able to go to sleep and ride it out.
Clean up on Aisle 2!
Because Chuck had been periodically checking his work on the motor mounts, the bins with the food were not stowed properly.I had moved them to the cabling bench and wedged them in as best I could. They almost made it to Beaver Island but they finally crashed on one of the big rollers.
This is one of the videos that Chuck took up top, while I was down below.
